    Martha Baird Pictures

Martha Baird started The Dancemakers a newly-formed modern dance company and was the only one
of its kind in Massachusetts. It was started in June of 1959 with the sponsorship of the
Dance Circle of Boston. The group was composed of five professional dancers from the Boston area
whose experience and talent combine to make them a dynamic addition to their field.
The performers had studied under such well-known artists as Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, and La Meri.
Martha has since retired and lives in Dover. Featured in the photos with Martha is Gus Solomons.
Gus was a candidate for a degree in architecture from MIT in 1961.
He studied dance at the Boston Conservatory and at the Graham School in Boston.
He had been active in theater and dance productions in the Boston area for the past five years
. As a member of the Wellesley-Theater on the Green in 1959, he was a featured dancer in
“ A Street Car Named Desire” and choreographer for “Peter Pan.
